John Isner vs Florian Mayer match preview

Florian Mayer from Germany has not been in his best form from the beginning of 2012. This player by no doubt is very talented, at the same time he is dependent on his mood and game environment. When Mayer is in a good form, he can win against everyone. Even though hard court is not his favorite surface, his was able to beat Nadal, Nalbandian, Almagro, Del Potro and other strong tennis players in 2011. Moreover, those wins were easy for him, that’s why having a rival as Mayer cannot be safe anyway. The German player was not so impressive at the beginning of the season, but his last game with Dodig in Miami was ok. It means no one knows what to expect from him in his next match.
Speaking about John’s current form, it seems almost the same as it was in Indian Wells. His game with Davydenko was not easy, all 3 sets were needed to determine the winner. Moreover, Isner had a lot of problems on his serve, most games on his serve were long and nervous. But when referring to stats, we can find that John Isner was ok, even above average for a starting match. We are sure, that Big Man has everything to beat Florian Mayer even if German shows his a-game, but there will be a lot of pressure for Isner. Everybody wants him to repeat his success in Indian Wells, and the victory against Mayer seems important to defend John’s points in Miami from the last year. A lot of players at TOP-10 and near have very close number of points at the moment, so this tournament may change TOP-15 rankings dramatically. The pressure and non-standard play from German may transform to a hard game, but John should win!

  1. Mayer is a truly unpredictable player. He managed to win 6-4, 6-2. Isner played at his average level, but had a rather low win percentage on Mayer's serve. I hope this loss won't affect Isner's ranking.
